About
Mareson Yates is a recent graduate of Montserrat College of Art, having received his BFA in 2020 with a concentration in Photo/ Video/ Film.
At Montserrat, he worked as an event photographer for the Artrageous! 33 Juried Art Auction and as a Lab Monitor for the Photo/ Video/ Film Department where he assisted students and helped oversee student facility use. In addition to his studies, Mareson has completed an internship with Patricia Scialo, a mixed media photographer based in Lynn, MA, with whom he set up a working darkroom and learned how to make cyanotypes and large format prints.
Mareson’s work has been included in the Montserrat Juried Open House exhibition 2017 - 2020, and his senior thesis show titled “Late Bloomer“ has been highlighted as a Montserrrat Digital Exhibition in 2020. His work focuses on the ideas of exploration and discovery while employing a variety of photographic techniques. Through his photographs, he aims to share the beauty he finds in the world and connect it to the viewer.
His thesis work is a photographic documentation of himself as a ghostly figure inhabiting an abandoned house. Through the images, the viewer can understand how the figure and the house interact with and change each other. Every time the figure comes back, the house reveals something new to it, telling stories of lives once lived. The figure, and now the viewer are left to piece together the story from the fragments left behind.
